One of the most trusted sources of up-to-date and evidence based information about health conditions and treatment options is bpacNZ. This is a New Zealand not-for-profit organisation that develops and disseminates ‘best practice’ information to GPs and others through their website, reports, email communications and social media. GPs can also get continuing medical education credits when they read their articles.
bpacNZ has just updated their online article on migraine (and their b-quick summary). This hadn’t been updated since 2017 – a lot has happened since then! The new article includes reference to the anti-CGRP medications now available in New Zealand and comprehensive discussion of migraine management.
The new article features several quotes from our 2022 Migraine in Aotearoa New Zealand story (anonymised) to demonstrate the hard realities of living with migraine disease and a story from Migraine Foundation co-founder Fiona Imlach. We hope that the inclusion of these perspectives from real people with migraine will help GPs and others who read this article to understand the impact of this disease and how important it is for health professionals to take this seriously and be informed about best practice acute treatment (especially the use of triptans and anti-emetics), preventive treatment and support for behavioural and lifestyle management.
This article was reviewed by neurologist and headache specialist Dr Desiree Fernandez, who is also a member of our Clinical Advisory Group.
